Chapter
Thirty-Nine
The room we were given was small, with four sets of bunk beds. Each bed had a set of clothing for the men, Kazhi having already changed. A noticeable pair of clothing was missing. It wasnât that I needed to change. I wasnât covered in blood and gore. I just noted that I was to be treated like I wasnât even here.
âThereâs a bathing room through there.â Kazhi pointed to a door to the side of the room. âRunning water on this ship. We lucked out catching a ride with them.â
Nuo scoffed, Brekt stayed silent, and Bastane sighed before he took the first turn using the bathing room. The negative energy in the small space was suffocating.
Kazhiâs hands went to her hips. Her black eyes bore into her brothers. âYou guys are still letting all that shit bother you? You need to hide your feelings better.â
Nuo sat on the edge of a bed, playing with his new clothes. Brekt folded his arms and leaned against the wall. Neither seemed willing to admit they felt anything at all.
Kazhi huffed. âFine. Iâm going to say hello to some of our friends. Supper is in a few hours, and Falizha wants us to join her.â She looked at me, considering. âI donât know if that invitation was extended to you.â There was no guilt in her tone, only stating a fact.
Nuo lifted his head. âB and I will take dinner together. Here.â
Brekt crossed his arms, and a shadow moved under his skin. âIf I have to suffer it, so do you.â
âAnd leave Liv alone down here?â Nuo tilted his head, knowing Brekt wouldnât argue.
Brektâs nostrils flared. âFine.â
Kazhi left, off to find the Guardians they called friends. It took some time for the boys to get cleaned and changed. I sat on one of the bunks, leaning back against a wall and fidgeting with my hands.
I was hidden in shadow, watching Nuo towel dry his hair, when my situation sank in a little too deep. I felt trapped, watched, and claustrophobicâlike a mouse hiding from the cat waiting outside, watching the hole. Similar to walking through town back homeâtoo many eyes watching, too many chances for me to slip up. Maybe I could hide down in this cabin for the entire trip.
âWho is Falizha?â I asked.
Brekt was in the bathing room, and Bastane had gone to find Kazhi. Nuo was the only one present, sitting across the room from me. He looked up, and his dark, wet hair fell around his handsome face.
He was freshly shaven, and a lovely citrus smell was coming off him. His arms rested on his knees, and he was back in plain black clothing. His shirt was tight across his chest, showing off his muscular form.
An unwanted emotion swept through me. Nuo was attractive and easy to be around. He was a Guardâpowerful and fierce when needed.
It could be easy to fall in love with him.
Being here alone, it hit me how strongly I already felt. My heart pounded a bit harder, but a certain substance was missing.
